Human Rights Week - An Initiative of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia: "The Imperative of Responsibility / Das Prinzip der Verantwortung" - The German philosopher Hans Jonas work

A clean environment - a human right?

In times of existential threats and war, clean air, clean water, shade and agreeable weather may all sound like luxuries people in the Middle East do not have time to ponder. Yet as climate change progresses, it becomes increasingly evident they are but bare necessities for human survival.

Is access to these amenities an inviolable human right?

In the framework of Human Rights Week, The Office of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia is proud to invite you to an event hosting two experts on this topic.

The event will be opened by remarks of her excellency Mrs. Helena Merks, deputy ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in Israel

Professor Ron Margolin from the Department of Jewish Philosophy of Tel Aviv University will examine “The Imperative of Responsibility: In Search of Ethics for the Technological Age”, the seminal work of the Jewish philosopher Hans Jonas, né of North Rhine-Westphalia, which laid the ethical foundation for environmental movements.

Gidon Bromberg is the founder of Ecopeace, the only international environmental organisation in the Middle East, which was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. He will lay out how his organisation is securing the foundations for human existence in this region despite the challenges posed by enmity and climate change, and how this can help secure peace in the Middle East.

The lectures will be followed by a brief New Year’s reception on our premises.

Human Rights Week Dec 3rd to Dec 10th - An Initiative of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, see all eventsSee all the events happening in Düsseldorf, Berlin and Tel Aviv.

Wars and conflicts in many parts of the world mean that human rights are increasingly at risk. Autocrats restrict basic rights and imprison critics, women's rights are sometimes systematically suppressed. In order to draw attention to the many courageous people who, despite oppression, the threat of imprisonment and risking their lives, stand up for basic rights in their countries, the state government is holding a Human Rights Week for the second time from the 3rd to 10th of December 2024.
